Best time to hike the Path of the Gods
Spring (April–June): the ideal season
Mild temperatures, clear days, and wildflowers. April and May are perfect — warm enough to hike comfortably, cool enough that you don’t overheat. Crowds start building by June but are still manageable. This is the sweet spot if you can choose your dates.
Summer (July–August): hot and busy
Temperatures can reach 30°C+. The path is in full sun with no shade, and you are hiking with hundreds of others. It is doable if you start at dawn (7–8 AM), finish by noon, and bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Midday hiking in July heat is not fun. Hotels are full and tours book out.
Autumn (September–October): the other ideal season
Late September and October are as good as spring. Temperatures are still warm, days are clear, and crowds thin out. September can still be warm; October cools down. Both are excellent for hiking.
Winter (November–March): muddy, foggy, or closed
Winter on the Amalfi Coast is mild but wet. Rain brings mud and fog, which obscures the views (the whole point of the hike). After storms, the path can close temporarily. February is the wettest month. It is walkable if you hit a dry spell, but it is not reliable. Always check locally before setting out.
Practical notes for each season
- Spring: layers — mornings can be cool. Allergy-prone? Hay fever can hit in May.
- Summer: start very early (7 AM). Bring sunscreen (50+ SPF), a hat, and lots of water (2+ litres). A rash guard or long sleeves help. Afternoon thunderstorms can pass through.
- Autumn: similar to spring. Layers are good; the sun is still strong. October winds can pick up on the cliff.
- Winter: waterproof jacket and trousers, grip shoes with good tread (steps and terrain get slippery). Check weather and close forecasts before you go. Book a tour with a guide rather than going solo.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to hike the Path of the Gods?
April–June and September–October. Both have mild temperatures, clear skies, and fewer crowds. May and September are peak ideal months.
Can I hike it in summer?
Yes, but it is hot and crowded. Start at 7–8 AM, bring 2+ litres of water, sunscreen (50+ SPF), and a hat. The path has no shade and July–August can exceed 30°C.
Is it safe to hike in winter?
Possibly, but not reliably. Winter is wet and foggy; the views (the whole point) often disappear. Paths get muddy and slippery. Check weather forecasts and ask locally before setting out. It is not ideal.
Is the Path of the Gods crowded?
July and August are the busiest. May and September are also busy but less so. If you want solitude, go in April or October.
What if I can only go in summer?
Start at dawn (7–8 AM), bring plenty of water and sunscreen, wear light colours and a hat, and wear grip trainers. The hike is doable but tiring in heat. Avoid midday. Book a guided tour if you prefer not to worry about buses.
