Free: walking the trail itself, from Bomerano to Nocelle. No fees, no gates, no permits. The path is public and open year-round.

Costs money:

• Getting to Bomerano. SITA buses cost a few euros, or a guided tour with transfers starts around €80 per person.
• A guide (optional). You don’t need one, but if you hire one, expect €80–125+ per person depending on tour and group size.
• Lunch. Many guided tours stop at a shepherd’s hut for bread, cheese, and tomato. The hut requests a donation (usually a few euros), and it is optional.
• The bus down from Nocelle (optional). If you don’t walk the 1,500 steps, a small local bus Nocelle to Positano costs just a few euros.

The honest answer

The hike is free. The Amalfi Coast logistics are not. Getting to a high, remote trailhead by yourself is awkward and time-consuming by bus. That is why people book tours — not because the trail is expensive, but because the convenience of door-to-door transfers and a guide costs money and is worth it to most. If you have time, a car, or don’t mind a bus schedule, you can do it for just the cost of a SITA ticket. If you want no stress, book a tour.
